Frequently asked questions

Who can become an educator?
Anyone with a skill, craft, or hobby to share. Every educator must pass identity verification (government ID + selfie) and an Ontario Vulnerable Sector Check, and an admin reviews the credentials they list before approving them. Once approved, educators set their own activities, schedule, and pricing.
How much does it cost? (Full pricing explanation)
The per-child price is set at publish time as (educator's fee + venue's day rate) ÷ maximum class size. It's then locked — parents pay that exact amount per kid, no matter what. Worked example: an educator wants $200 to run the trip, a venue charges $150 for the day, max class is 10 kids. Per-child price = ($200 + $150) ÷ 10 = $35. Parents see $35/kid. Now what each side takes home depends on how many kids book: if 10 kids book, the educator earns $180 (90% of their $200; Covey takes the 10% platform fee) and the venue earns $135 (90% of $150). If only 5 kids book, the educator earns ~$90 and the venue ~$67 — both sides earn proportionally to how full the class fills. Parents always pay the listed $35/kid; the educator and venue absorb the cost of under-booking together, weighted by the fees they set. Public spaces like parks are free (no venue day rate), so the educator keeps 90% of the per-child fee × kids booked. The minimum number of kids is just the threshold for the trip to actually run; if it doesn't reach minimum, the trip auto-cancels and no one is charged. Most activities land around $30–$150 per child.
When am I charged?
When you reserve a spot, your card is saved but not charged. Each trip has a minimum number of kids to run; once that minimum is reached, the trip is confirmed and all reserved cards are charged together. If a trip doesn't reach its minimum, it automatically cancels 24 hours before the start time and no one is charged.
What if the trip gets cancelled?
If an educator cancels a confirmed trip (illness, emergency), Covey automatically refunds every booked parent in full — typically within 5–10 business days. If a trip auto-cancels for not reaching its minimum, no charge was ever made.
What if a parent cancels their booking?
If you cancel 48 hours or more before the trip starts, you get a 50% refund. If you cancel less than 48 hours before the trip, no refund — the educator and venue have already committed time and resources by then. To cancel, open the trip in the Covey app and tap Cancel; the confirmation dialog shows the exact refund amount before you commit. If a parent cancellation drops the trip below its minimum class size and the seat doesn't refill, the educator and venue earn proportionally less for that trip.
Is my child safe?
Safety is our priority. Every user — parents, educators, and Venue Operators — passes a Stripe Identity check (government photo ID + a live selfie), and educators additionally clear an Ontario Vulnerable Sector Check. Private venues are vetted with proof of ownership and insurance; public spaces (parks, libraries, beaches) are used as-is, like any outing. You control exactly who can pick up your child, and you can report or block any user in-app. See our Child Safety Standards for how we moderate content and handle concerns.
What happens if a parent is late for pickup?
If you're running late, your child stays with the educator, who will reach the people on your child's profile in order — your primary contact first, then your secondary/emergency contact. Please keep those contacts up to date and pickup-ready: that's the line we rely on while in-app messaging is still on our roadmap. We're also evaluating optional late-pickup fees based on community feedback.
Where is Covey available?
Covey is currently available in Ontario, Canada. We're expanding to more provinces soon. Sign up to be notified when we launch in your area.
How do educators get paid?
Educators keep 90% of the activity price (Covey's platform fee is 10%), paid to their bank account via Stripe a couple of business days after the activity runs.
Can I list my venue?
Yes, as long as it's a publicly-accessible place of business — farms, studios, community centres, workshops, indoor playgrounds, makerspaces, gyms, etc. You'll provide proof of ownership or lease and liability insurance, set your own day rate, and approve every educator proposal before anything is booked. Private residences (homes, private backyards, garages) are not permitted. Free public spaces like parks and libraries don't need a listing — educators can use those directly.
